THE  WAYFINDERS, the latest book by National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence , Wade Davis (Anasi Press, 2009) is a compilation of the Canadian Massey Lectures series Mr. Davis delivered last year. The series was inaugurated in 1962 to provide a forum on radio where major contemporary thinkers could address important issues of our time.

An ethnobotanist and anthropologist, throughout his career Wade Davis  has lived with people in  cultures which maintain deep and dynamic ties with their indigenous roots, people who have  not forgotten the old ways, especially ways of thinking and interacting with the earth– some would say, people who have true wisdom.

Though we are now familiar with the web of  animal and plant life  the biosphere, in The Wayfinders, Wade Davis takes us on a tour of the social web of life, the ethnosphere- “humanities greatest legacy. It is the product of our dreams, the embodiment of our hopes, the symbol of all we are and all that we, as a wildly inquisitive and astonishingly adaptive species, have created.”

The Wayfinders is an astonishing trip of a read, full of beauty, hope, and inspiration-as well as alarm.

You can purchase The Wayfinders, or hear  Wade deliver an overview at a TED conference.

Celebrate Caregivers!

More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one.

The typical family caregiver is a 49-year-old woman caring for her widowed 69-year old mother who does not live with her. She is married and employed. Approximately 69% of family caregivers are women. More than 37% have children or grandchildren under 18 living with them. Sadly, many caregivers forget to care for themselves. National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP
